The Birth of Prymal Sense
In May of 2018 our family of 7, left our house and spent two and a half years traveling the 48 contiguous states. We set out on our unforgettable journey with a 1-ton diesel, a 42 foot 5th wheel, and a minivan. The time with family was much more meaningful, without the hustle of running between soccer, karate, ballet, and church events. The time exploring the landscapes and history of our country together was priceless.
Although our truck performed well for us, the thoughts and concerns of a breakdown always seemed to sit in the back of my mind during longer hauls. Mountain passes, desert stretches, and vast remote expanses can be hard on your equipment. Dummy lights don’t always instill confidence. I quickly learned the importance of monitoring our vehicle systems and tracking trends in performance.
With a fuel injection tune, I wanted to keep an eye on Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs). High EGTs can burn valves, and cause thermal stresses on other components like pistons and turbos. These become costly repairs. As an engineer, I found a solution for myself. I created a gauge that provided a trend of EGTs, which proved helpful going over mountain passes. The readout was on an OLED display on my dashboard, but I didn’t like the clutter. I soon found I could put the display onto my phone, which was already my GPS.
Having trend data, allows you to create a better understanding of your equipment. The visual feedback literally “connects the dots” for you. It allows you to correlate trans, diff, and engine temperatures in an intelligent way, rather than just obsessing over gauges. Armed with this trend data, I had a better peace of mind as we continued our travels.
